Yarra Yarra Rowing Club

Learn to Row

Designed for novice or first-time rowers, our adult Learn to Row program is for people who want to learn how to row – and have fun!

There are five sessions which are run out of our rowing sheds, on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. Each session starts on the rowing machines to get you familiar with learning the stroke, before we head out on the water.

What you'll learn

  • Basic rowing technique, rhythm and timing – both on a rowing machine (ergo) and on-water
  • The four stages of the rowing stroke
  • Power, ratios and exercises for improving technique and fitness, as well as stretching tips
  • Boat preparation including handling, rigging the boat, boat landings, other equipment and cleaning
  • Marine safety and laws including learning how to share our waterway (the Yarra River) with other boats and general safety
  • Boat terminology
  • Rowing in a team

Come on down and give rowing a try! You'll discover a fun, social, and truly enjoyable atmosphere to get fit, make friends and create a boatload of great memories!

How do I continue rowing after I've done the Learn to Row program?

Your LTR registration can be upgraded to a Full Active Membership if you wish to continue rowing after the course. Active Membership entitles you to use the boats and on-water equipment (with the Captain's permission). You'll also have full access to the club's premises, the gym and ergos, the change room, showers and lockers, the bar, as well as access to club coaching in the Development Squad, at designated times. When your skills are of a sufficient standard, you can also start competing in regattas! A full active member has voting rights at the Club's AGM (with a waiting period of 1 year before you are eligible to vote).

If you are still unsure about committing to an annual membership, we do have a Bridging payment option which allows you to row as a full active member for 4 months. You will have all the same benefits as an active member during this period. Plus we'll allocate you a 'buddy' - a member of the club who you can contact to ask any questions, and who can provide you some help and guidance whilst you find your way in your new chosen sport. This is only available to people who have come through our Learn to Row program, and only as a 'once-off' (you cannot repeat the 4 month payment option). For more information, click here or speak to the Membership Manager.

Still unsure? Let's chat!

Feel free to send an email to our Learn to Row Manager who will be happy to have a chat or answer any questions.
